Film

This 27 minute, colour, sound film is now available on DVD. Accurately researched and based on Lancaster’s 1808 book, ”Improvements in Education As It Respects the Industrious Classes”.

PEBBLES INTO DIAMONDS recreates the early nineteenth century with its carriages, costumes and settings. Showing Lancaster’s adoption of the factory system, whereby one schoolmaster might teach a thousand pupils, the rigid discipline, military style commands, graded tasks and roles of monitors and pupil teachers are all depicted.

Used regularly at Brunel University, as part of their courses on nineteenth century developments in education, it shows the dawn of education for the masses and stimulates comparison with current educational practice.
